Simply put, Premium fuel is a few octane points higher (91 or 93) than Regular Unleaded fuel (87 or 89), and burns more efficiently during combustion. According to Exxon Mobile octane rating measures the fuel’s ability to resist engine ‘knocking.’ The higher the octane rating, the greater the fuel’s resistance to ‘knocking’ or ‘pinging.’

Why does my Volkswagen require Premium Fuel?

Because some Volkswagen models have higher compression engines, Premium Fuel is necessary for some models to ensure proper functioning. You’ll find older VW models will often require Premium Fuel, while many newer models can operate using Regular Unleaded Fuel. If you are using Regular Unleaded Fuel and you are experiencing engine ‘knocking’ or ‘pinging,’ you should switch to Premium Fuel. Remember, premium fuel is designed to ensure your engine operates smoothly over time.

How do I know if my vehicle should use Premium Fuel?

While many Volkswagen’s require Premium Fuel, there are some models that don’t require, but “recommend” you use Premium Fuel instead of Regular Unleaded Fuel. There is a lot of debate about whether or not your Volkswagen NEEDS Premium Fuel to operate, so we recommend you consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual to find out which type of fuel is necessary for the optimal performance of your Volkswagen.
