Why You Should Upgrade to the Atlas SEL Premium R-Line
If you’re considering a new family SUV, you want something the whole family will love. That’s what makes the Volkswagen Atlas special. In 2021, the Atlas earned the title of the family car of the year and the best family car.
Atlas comes in multiple trim levels, and the SEL Premium R-Line trim represents the pinnacle of family SUVs and thus, gets our recommendation as the top choice. However, we’ll take a look at the lower trims and compare them to the Atlas SEL Premium R-Line so you can see the benefits of moving to the top trim.
Curb Appeal
Every Atlas features a bold exterior style with sharp lines and flared wheel wells that give it an athletic posture. The base SE trim comes with LED headlights and daytime running lights. It rolls on premium 20-inch alloy wheels and has standard black roof rails. For your convenience, the power-operated side mirrors heat. Additionally, you can add a power tilting sunroof as an option.
You get heated windshield washer nozzles, upgraded LED performance headlights, and daytime running lights as you move up to the SEL trim. The power tilting sunroof comes standard on the SEL. In addition, the SEL trim adds a memory function to the power, heated side mirrors to recall your favorite positions.
On the Premium R-Line trim, you get signature badging and an R-Line-specific front bumper and grille. Volkswagen adds an adaptive front lighting system on the R-Line that brightens your way, even around corners. The R-Line trim rolls on stylish 21-inch two-tone machined alloy wheels. You also get a trailer hitch standard, enabling you to take your camper or boat along on your next family vacation.
Interior Comfort and Convenience
Inside the base model SE, you get a standard with a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. Volkswagen’s V-Tex leatherette upholstery adds durable comfort. You get a driver’s seat with memory to bring your seat to your preferred position on the SEL and R-line trims. Also, these top two trims add ambient lighting.
However, the top R-Line trim moves to premium leather seating with heating in the first and second rows and a standard ventilated front row.
In-Vehicle Technology
Your in-vehicle tech runs through the Composition Media touchscreen with an 8-inch color display on the SE trim. The Composition Media system includes a proximity sensor, AM/FM/HD radio, and voice control capability.
Volkswagen’s App-Connect system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, enabling you to sync your cellphones. Now you can access your favorite apps, stream your playlists, make calls, and be more hands-free using intuitive voice commands. The SE also features the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit with state-of-the-art navigation in high resolution.
The SEL and R-Line trims use the Discover Media touchscreen that adds built-in navigation to the 8-inch display. It also includes VW’s Dynamic Road Sign technology that recognizes standard road signs and projects the image to the display screen. The top trims upgrade to the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro system to customize the features you use most.
The Premium R-Line trim comes with a Fender premium audio system. This system delivers theater-quality sound for an immersive listening experience.
Driver-Assist Technology
Volkswagen’s Atlas SE and SEL trim come with the Park Distance Control with Maneuver Braking system. This system uses sensors and the Rear View Camera system that projects a live video feed to your display to alert you to objects. If you fail to react, the system can engage emergency brake support to help mitigate or avoid a collision.
The SEL trim also comes with High Beam Control which uses a camera mounted to the base of the rearview mirror to scan the way forward. When conditions warrant it, the system automatically turns on your high beams. The system recognizes on-coming vehicles and vehicles you approach from the rear, then toggles to the low beams.
On the Premium R-Line trim, you get Park Assist. The Park Assist system can identify if a parking space has room for your Atlas. Then, it can help steer you into or out of the space, either parallel or perpendicular. Another Premium R-Line-specific system, Area View, provides a birds-eye view around your Atlas, helping you navigate tight areas.
SEL and Premium R-Line trims come standard with Travel Assist, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist systems. Travel Assist and Lane Assist use radar and cameras to track and control your Atlas while traveling within marked lanes. Emergency Assist recognizes when a driver has lost the ability to control the vehicle. After several alerts, the system will bring your Atlas to a controlled stop to avoid an accident.
Powertrain Options
The SE trim comes with Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic technology. This powertrain puts out 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. You get a capable front-wheel-drive system on the SE.
You get the same powertrain on the Atlas SEL trim, but you upgrade to the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system standard. Volkswagen uses a powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine in the SEL Premium R-Line trim mated to the same eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. This powertrain delivers an impressive 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. With the Premium R-Line V-6, you can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
While every Atlas offers exceptional style, the benefits of trading up to the Premium R-Line add more of everything. Upgraded comfort and convenience features, other driver-assist systems, and more advanced technology put the SEL Premium R-Line trim in a class of its own.
