Rollover Protection System protects convertible passengers in rollover accidents

With the top down on vehicles such as the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, passengers are put at higher risk in the event of an accident, especially in rollover accidents.

To protect the passengers of vehicles such as the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, Volkswagen has developed the active Roll-Over Bar System, a protective system designed to help prevent serious injury in the event of a roll-over accident.

How does the Volkswagen rollover bar system work?

The active roll-over bar system is located behind the rear head restraints, as seen on the right. It provides extra support behind the vehicle, protecting passengers. It features two housings fitted behind each of the rear seats. The bars feature a sectional design, allowing them to absorb higher forces than previous systems.

The system is activated by the airbag control unit, which senses a possible rollover or collision. Then, a release system is triggered, which causes the supporting beams to shoot up by a maximum of 10.5 inches in 0.25 seconds. The beams then lock into place and, along with the extremely rigid front windscreen frame, provide protection for all four seats. If the system is deployed, but the car does not flip, the beams can be pushed back into their housings by hand.
This was designed to keep repair charges low.
