The New 2025 Volkswagen ID.7: What We Know

August 9th, 2023 by

Volkswagen is releasing an all-new electric vehicle (EV) for the 2025 model year: the ID.7. Joining the electric ID.4 and ID. Buzz SUV and minivan, the ID.7 will be a four-door midsize sedan that replaces the Passat. It’s ideal for both eco- and cost-conscious drivers. Here’s what we know so far about this sophisticated and stylish EV set to hit the U.S. market in the latter half of 2024.

Aerodynamic Design

Volkswagen has gone out of its way to make the new ID.7 a super sleek and aerodynamic vehicle for maximum driving range and performance. When you combine its short front end, low hood, and fastback roofline with a silhouette that tapers toward the rear, you get a stunningly low drag coefficient of 0.23.

Other aerodynamic exterior features designed to control airflow around the vehicle include reimagined wheel spoilers and side mirrors, side sills with flares, an enclosed underbody, air curtains on each side of the front bumper, a gloss-black diffuser at the rear, and trim panels. As a result of the car’s shape, it glides effortlessly down the pavement with minimal in-cabin road noise. The sedan looks sleek, too, with its black roof and LED lights running horizontally between the LED headlights.

Impressive Performance

The first-generation 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 will feature a single-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive electric motor that comes with a 77 kWh battery pack and produces 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque. This is the same 400-volt modular electric drive platform that powers the ID.4 and ID. Buzz. It should allow the ID.7 to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5 seconds.

While we don’t yet have official figures, Volkswagen estimates the ID.7 will have a driving range of around 300 miles. Its charging time from 10% to 80% with a DC fast charger is just half an hour. You can charge it to 100% using an at-home Level 2 charger in 7.5 hours. Going forward, we expect the EV to gain an optional all-wheel-drive dual motor and a larger 86 kWh battery pack with an estimated driving range of 350 miles. While the EPA hasn’t yet produced estimates of the ID.7’s fuel economy, the sedan should have higher figures than the ID.4’s 104-107 mpge (depending on the trim) in the city.

In test drives, the ID.7 has demonstrated exceptional handling and control and a firm suspension. The adaptive damping system creates a stable and comfortable ride, while the variable-ratio electric steering system makes cornering silky smooth with minimal feedback. Because Volkswagen mounts the lithium-ion battery pack in the chassis floor, the vehicle’s weight remains low, allowing it to drive smoothly and handle well on curves. Volkswagen also equips the ID.7 with the manufacturer’s driving dynamics manager technology that lets drivers choose between four drive modes, depending on road conditions and driving preferences: Comfort, Eco, Individual, and Sport.

Interior Comforts

The four-door 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 has an airy and spacious interior and plenty of cargo room, thanks to the liftback that replaces a normal trunk. It gives the ID.7 18.7 cubic feet of rear cargo space. The sedan seats up to five, and the rear seats fold flat if you need even more space. Total vehicle dimensions are generous at 195.3 inches long and 73.3 inches wide, sitting on a 116.8-inch wheelbase. This is slightly larger than the outgoing Passat’s dimensions.

The materials in the cabin are high quality and cutting edge, for what Volkswagen calls an “electric business class” vibe. An optional glass roof, for instance, can toggle between transparent and opaque on voice command. Other interior features include a revolutionary air vent system that more effectively sends cool or warm air throughout the cabin, heated and cooled seats, and a heated steering wheel. The newly designed front seats use the Climatronic system and have 14 adjustments and three modes: maximum ventilation, heating, and drying.

Extra luxuries, such as massaging seats and a 14-speaker 700-watt Harman Kardon audio system, will be optional. Ten air cushions in the seats and backrest create the available massaging sensation to keep the driver and passenger relaxed and comfortable on long rides.

Next-Generation Technology

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.7’s 15-inch centrally located horizontal touch screen for the infotainment system is as impressive as it is easy to use. It has two touch bars — one across the top of the screen and another across the bottom — that allow you to access the control center’s vehicle functions, your apps, air conditioning, and the massage and climate controls for the front seats. To control the vehicle’s audio and interior temperature, simply use the lighted touch sliders.

A large and colorful head-up display comes standard as part of Volkswagen’s virtual cockpit. It pairs with a small digital gauge display and allows you to customize and view the information you value most, such as speed, battery information, directions, media, and more. Volkswagen also introduces a new voice-command system that enables the driver and front passenger (but not the rear-seat occupants) to activate climate control, navigation, drive modes, and media using a variety of commands that refresh automatically via over-air updates.

An Emphasis on Safety

The 2025 ID.7 should be equipped with an extensive suite of safety and driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. We also expect the sedan to feature Volkswagen’s impressive warranties, such as:

  • A four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty.
  • A four-year or 50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
  • Two years or 20,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
  • Eight years or 100,000 miles of coverage for the electric and battery components.
