ID.4 Range

The EPA-estimated Volkswagen ID.4 range varies by trim. In the ID.4 Pro, you can get the highest estimated driving range of 275 miles on a full charge, whereas the ID.4 S has the lowest range of 209 miles when the battery is full. Your exact range will vary depending on factors such as your driving style, the weather, the age of the battery, and the condition of your ID.4. Which accessories you use, such as the radio, air conditioning, and infotainment system, and how often you use them also affects your range.

It’s best to keep your EV optimally charged if you want to prolong the battery’s life. This typically means you don’t want to charge the battery to 100%. Instead, your target should be to get the battery up to an 80% charge and then unplug it. Of course, you can charge the battery to 100% when you need to for the longest possible range.

ID.4 Charge Time

Like the range, the ID.4 charge time can vary based on a variety of factors. There are three charging levels available for your Volkswagen ID.4. A Level 1 charger is probably the most convenient but also the slowest way to recharge your EV battery. This is an at-home charging method where you simply plug your vehicle into a standard 120-volt wall outlet. Using this method, you’ll get between 2 and 5 miles of range per hour of charging. To get your battery to 80% using Level 1 charging could take a day or more, depending on the initial charging level.

Another way to conveniently charge your ID.4 at home is to have a Level 2 charger installed by a professional electrician. Although you’ll have to pay extra for the charging unit and installation, your Level 2 charger will greatly improve charge time. The Level 2 charger provides 240 volts to charge your vehicle, reducing charge time to between 7.5 hours and 11.5 hours. With this type of charger, you’ll restore anywhere from 24 to 36 miles of range per hour.

When you need to charge your ID.4 battery on the go, you can take advantage of a growing network of Level 3 DC fast-charging stations. At a Level 3 fast charger, you can get up to 89 miles of range in just 10 minutes, although results vary depending on the same factors that can affect driving range.

ID.4 Charging Stations

Not all public DC charging stations are capable of recharging the ID.4’s battery. Your ID.4 comes with a combined charging system plug, meaning that it can plug into about 4,300 of the 6,000 DC fast-charging stations found around the country. Additionally, you receive three years of free charging at Electrify America charging stations, but not all available DC charging stations are part of this network. The best way to ensure you’re charging at one of the stations in the network is to download the Electrify America app.

With the app, you can find one of the over 800 Electrify America charging stations so you can get 30 minutes of free charging. You get unlimited 30-minute charging sessions, but note you do have to wait at least 60 minutes between charges if your ID.4 requires more than 30 minutes of charge time.

ID.4 Home Charging

While simply plugging into a wall socket at home is possible with Level 1 charging, this isn’t the charging method Volkswagen recommends. For the ID.4 and most EVs, having a Level 2 charger at home makes the most sense. You’ll get a much faster charge time and more convenience with at-home Level 2 charging. Using fast charging for your ID.4 too frequently is not recommended, as it could degrade the battery faster than using slower charging options, such as a Level 2 charger at home.

By having a Level 2 charger installed, you can plug in your ID.4 when you go to bed, and it should be ready to go by the time you get up. Check with your electricity provider to find out how much it will cost to charge your ID.4 at home, as electricity rates vary by location.

ID.4 Battery Warranty

You get several warranties when you purchase a brand-new ID.4, including a battery warranty. This is great news for those interested in switching to an EV because the battery is one of the more expensive parts to replace on these vehicles. Owners of the ID.4 can rest easy knowing their high-voltage battery comes with an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first. This warranty covers any material or manufacturing defects that prevent the battery from working as it should.

In addition to the battery warranty, you also get a four-year/50,000-mile new vehicle warranty, two years/20,000 miles of schedule-free maintenance, and three years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance. These warranties give you peace of mind and make ID.4 ownership more enjoyable.
