December 20th, 2021 by

It’s difficult to deny the impressiveness of the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 all-electric SUV. It’s bringing the future of the personal vehicle world to us today. But a common concern for many people who are thinking about making the switch to electric energy is how they will be able to charge their vehicle, where they will be able to, and how long it will take each time.

Our team at Capistrano Volkswagen is here to answer your questions. Below, you’ll find an introduction to charging your ID.4 to help you figure out if it’s the right choice as you search for your next vehicle.

The Electric Strength of the 2021 ID.4

Volkswagen has its eye on the future, and the 2021 ID.4 will lead us into that electrified future. This is the latest all-electric model in the Volkswagen family, and the best yet. The ID.4 is a five-seater SUV with a modern style and next-level amenities. Its powertrain delivers up to an EPA-estimated 260 miles of emissions-free range.

There are many reasons to switching to a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, but chief among them is plug-in electric fuel. Volkswagen estimates that switching to the ID.4 can save you up to $4,000 in fuel cost over five years.

How Long Does It Take to Charge the ID.4?

Since the ID.4 has multiple charging methods, the amount of time it takes to recharge its battery varies. By far, the fastest way to recharge the Volkswagen ID.4 is with a DC public fast charger. These public stations can charge the 2021 ID.4 from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes with a 150-kW charger and an hour with a 50-kW charger. Charging times grow longer below 20% and above 80%. Volkswagen estimates that a public DC fast charger can give the ID.4 62 miles in about 10 minutes.

Here is how long other charging methods take to completely charge the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 from empty to full:

  • Using a 22-kW Level 2 charger — which are most often found outside of homes — can fully charge a 2021 ID.4 from empty in 8 hours at a rate of 38 miles of range per hour.
  • A 7-kW Level 2 charger like those professionally installed in homes and at various businesses takes 12 hours to fully charge an ID.4 at 24 miles of range per hour.
  • A 3.6-kW charger takes 22 hours to fully charge an ID.4 at a rate of 13 miles of range per hour.
  • A three-pin household-style plug takes 36 hours to charge the ID.4 from empty to full at a rate of eight miles of range per hour.

As you can see, the 2021 ID.4 doesn’t leave you hanging when it comes to finding ways to recharge your SUV. And with the nation continually growing toward an electric-based vehicle system, you’ll find plenty of chargers across the nation and possibly in your city to keep you on the road.

Where to Charge Your ID.4

The ID.4 comes standard with a Level 1 charging cable, which you can use to connect with the common household outlet. Though this is the slowest method of charging your ID.4, it helps ensure that you’ll rarely be without some way to charge your SUV.

If you want to increase the speed at which the ID.4 charges, consider upgrading your home with a Level 2 wall box.  This charger will get you that overnight full charge. Level 2 charging stations have to be professional professionally installed in your home, as they deliver more electricity than your household outlets.

Volkswagen is also partnering with Qmerit to help its customers get home charging installations. Qmerit tries to make the home-charger installation as simple as possible to make the electric transition easy. You can get a free estimate to see how much it would cost to get a Level 2 charger installed in your home. Prices for the service vary from home to home, but Qmerit’s transparent pricing that they’ll give you with your quote will help you better decide whether to move forward with the process of installing a Level 2 charger in your home.

If you’re taking a longer trip, you can rely on a nationwide network of over 17,000 public chargers to fuel your adventures with. Another major perk of choosing the ID.4 is that you’ll get three years of free unlimited charging at Electrify America DC fast chargers. You can find these chargers across the nation, with an impressive number in California.
