Frequently Asked Questions About The VW Golf

May 19th, 2022 by

We know you love classic VW rides like the Golf. Offering consistent quality and drivability for decades, there’s a lot to know about Volkswagen’s compact hatchback vehicle. We’ve assembled the top questions everyone’s asking with answers to help you find out more about the VW Golf.

Is the VW Golf Being Discontinued?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. Sadly, Volkswagen is discontinuing the traditional Golf for the American market. The sporty classic, available since the 1970s, finished production in 2021 with the last models completed at the Puebla Mexico vehicle plant. However, the car will live on in the Golf GTI and R models with new editions out for 2022. So while the classic is gone, the newer models offer even more speed and come factory-built from Germany.

Is the VW Golf a Reliable Car?

When safety meets quality, you find reliability in a vehicle. The Golf GTI gives you the same solid design and robust parts shared by the Volkswagen family of automobiles. Volkswagen vehicles also include the Carefree Coverage package. Most 2021 models and above set you up with two years (or 20,000 miles) of scheduled service like oil changes and multi-point inspections.

You can also find peace of mind in Volkswagen’s driver-assist technology. The IQ.Drive package, standard in most advanced trims and available in base models, includes the following:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Rear Traffic Alert
  • Travel Assist
  • Front Assist
  • Lane Assist
  • Emergency Assist (only available with automatic transmissions)
  • Active Blind Spot Monitor

The Golf GTI offers other technologies to assist you while you drive. Parking Distance Control helps you avoid objects as you park with audio and visual assistance, while Park Assist lets you know if you can fit into a space and guides you as you park. Golf’s Light Assist feature ensures the road ahead is brightly lit if you’re going 37 miles per hour or more. The Dynamic Road Sign Display service provides visual cues on the driver’s display screen to reinforce and remind you about speed limits and other road conditions.

Is the VW Golf Ranked High for Safety?

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as did the 2021 Golf FWD. Important safety features for the VW Golf include the Intelligent Crash Response System which protects the passengers and vehicle in the event of a collision, and a rear camera system giving you full views of the road behind your vehicle.  With safety features like the tire pressure monitoring system and automatic post-collision braking, the VW Golf gives you peace of mind as you drive.

Is the VW Golf Worth the Money?

The 2022 VW Golf GTI is packed with features and designed for elegant performance. Key elements of the Golf GTI include 241 horsepower in a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection engine with 273 pound-feet of torque. Drive your Golf GTI with a six-speed manual transmission to feel the thrill of shifting through the terrain in a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

A new Golf GTI offers more than just speed. The Volkswagen model seats five with up to 34.5 cubic feet of storage after folding down the second row. This sporty vehicle also offers lots of comforts for drivers and passengers including heated front seats, steering wheel, side mirrors, and adjustable ambient interior lighting with up to 30 color choices. Golf’s exterior design features 18-inch spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, LED foglights, taillights, headlights, and unique puddle lights that appear under the front doors.

With a base price tag of $29,800, the Golf GTI offers competitive power and standard features to other vehicles in its class.

Is the Golf R More Powerful?

The Golf R offers even more engine power than the GTI. Golf R models come packed with a 315 horsepower engine and 310 pound-feet of torque. This new revved-up engine is more powerful than previous models that offered 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The Golf R gives you more power than the GTI with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A manual transmission is an option too for drivers who prefer to shift their own gears. If you want a Volkswagen vehicle with plenty of zip, the Golf R is a viable option for an exciting ride.

Is the Golf GTI Available as an Automatic?

Yes, you can choose a seven-speed automatic option for all trims including the S, SE, and Autobahn. Depending on your driving style and history, you may prefer the automatic shifting function. While a manual transmission gives drivers the chance to personally regulate speeds through various road conditions, an automatic shifter still allows you to feel the speed and power of this sporty hatchback while the car shifts gears on its own.

Is the Golf Equipped with Infotainment Options?

The 2022 Golf GTI offers smartphone integration for Apple and Android technologies. Golf’s 8.25-inch touchscreen gives you a host of commands at your fingertips to scroll through your music, view directions, and access more information. Golf also features a seven-speaker sound system with an available Harmon Kardon system upgrade. The GTI comes with four USB ports for your devices, plus wireless charging and Bluetooth capabilities.

Is the Golf Autobahn Worth the Price?

Out of three trim levels for the Golf GTI, the Autobahn offers the most amenities and vehicle upgrades. Priced at $38,330, the Autobahn gives you the most premium interior features and technology as standard offerings. This includes a heads-up display, leather seating, and 19″ diamond-turned surface alloy wheels with summer performance tires. The Autobahn’s adaptive chassis control gives you more handling than previous models. Autobahn also offers the most driver-assist technology with standard light and park assist features.
