The 2023 VW ID.4 vs. 2022 VW ID.4: What’s New
Buying a new Volkswagen can be an exciting process, but figuring out which vehicle is the best match for your lifestyle, wants, and needs can take some serious time and research. One of the most popular options on the current Volkswagen lineup is the Volkswagen ID.4, which has the honorable distinction of being the automaker’s first long-range electric vehicle (EV). The ID.4 has everything you could ever want in an electric SUV, including spacious cabin and cargo areas, an impressively long driving range, and a sleek interior and exterior design.
Right now, you can purchase either the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 or wait for the launch of the all-new 2023 ID.4, making it important to compare the features and performance of both vehicles before making a decision. Our team of auto experts here at Capistrano Volkswagen have put together this article comparing the 2023 and 2022 models of the ID.4 in terms of their trim options and pricing, interior and exterior features, power and performance, and safety and security capabilities.
2023 ID.4 vs. 2022 ID.4 Updates
When Volkswagen announced the release of the 2022 ID.4, it revealed exciting updates to the vehicle’s already impressive design and functionality. Most notably, the 2022 ID.4 received an increase in power for its onboard charger, with the model having a 135-kilowatt capacity. The base model Pro with rear-wheel drive saw an increase in range from 260 to 280 miles per full-charge. While the 2021 ID.4 was available in three trims, the 2022 lineup omits the former First Edition trim. With an increase in driving range and features comes an increase in price, with each model increasing in cost.
The upcoming Volkswagen 2023 ID.4 will also have its own set of updates for the new year, with the main one having to do with the vehicle’s production location. Volkswagen announced that it plans to move all production of the U.S. version of the 2023 ID.4 to their Chattanooga, Tennessee location, with the goal of making a more American user-friendly center console and using a new battery supplier. The 2023 model will also bring the introduction of the ID.4’s updated base trim, providing a more affordable option on the EV lineup with an estimated starting price at around $35,000.
Trim Levels and Pricing
The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is available in two trim levels: the Pro and the Pro S. The plan for the 2023 model of the ID.4 is for Volkswagen to introduce an all-new base model to create a more affordable option on the lineup. The following are the different trim levels on both model years, with the starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 2022 vehicles and estimated starting cost for the upcoming 2023 ones:
2022:
- Volkswagen ID.4 Pro: starting MSRP of $41,230.
- Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S: starting MSRP of $45,730.
2023:
- Volkswagen ID.4 Base Model: estimated starting MSRP of $35,000.
- Volkswagen ID.4 Pro: estimated starting MSRP of $42,000.
- Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S: estimated starting MSRP of $47,000.
Depending on what features you value the most, you may be able to purchase a more affordable version of the ID.4 if you wait for the 2023 lineup to launch. If you’re still planning to purchase one of the higher trim levels, the price difference is not as distinct, although the 2022 versions of both the Pro and Pro S are likely to be cheaper than their 2023 counterpart models.
Exterior
The standard exterior features you can enjoy on the 2022 ID.4 Pro include 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, black roof rails, illuminated door handles, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Exterior paint colors available for the standard 2022 ID.4 include glacier white, mythos black, scale silver metallic, and moonstone gray, with the Pro S model available in dusk blue metallic. In comparison, it seems as though the 2023 ID.4 will have many of the same exterior features, but the new base model will likely differ slightly to accommodate for its lower price.
Interior
The interior of the 2022 ID.4 comes standard with various comfort and convenience features including 10-color customizable interior ambient lighting, Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth seating surfaces, heated front seats, leather-wrapped and heated multi-function steering wheel, a 60/40 split-folding back seat, and keyless access with proximity unlocking. From what we know about the 2023 model, the vehicle’s interior will include a large cargo area, 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation assistance, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a 5.3-inch digital gauge display with voice recognition.
Power and Performance
The power source on the 2022 and 2023 models are the same, with a single rear-mounted motor capable of generating 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque and a high voltage lithium-ion 77 kWh battery. A dual motor all-wheel drive upgrade is also available for both model years, which can generate an even more powerful 295 horsepower with the same 229 lb-ft of torque. In terms of fuel economy, the 2022 and 2023 ID.4 models have an EPA estimated MPG equivalent of 116 miles in the city and 98 miles on the highway, making for a combined rating of 107.
Safety and Security
The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 has various standard safety and driver-assistance features, including a rearview camera, an Intelligent Crash Response System, adaptive cruise, high beam, park distance controls, blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, and travel, lane, and emergency assists. The 2023 ID.4 will feature Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE system, which houses many of the same driver-assistance features as its 2022 counterpart to make for a more comfortable and confident driving and traveling experience.
