Volkswagen ID.4 Battery Charge Time Explained

Electric vehicles seem to be all the rage right now. Just look at some of the highest-priced investments in the stock market and it’s clear to see that EVs are where the money’s at. But with the rise in popularity and acceptance of EVs comes a lot of questions.

For instance, how long does it take an electric vehicle, like the Volkswagen ID.4, to fully charge?

Volkswagen ID.4 Charge Time

How fast the ID.4 charges depends on the type of charger and the outlet. Here’s how fast each type can juice the ID.4 up to its 250-mile range:

  • Level 1 (120V outlet) – 0-100% estimated 50 hours*
  • Level 2 (240V outlet) – 0-100% EPA-estimated 7.5 hours
  • Level 3 (DC fast charging) – 0-80% EPA-estimated at 38 minutes

Due to the way that DC fast charging works, the last 20% of charging takes longer than the first 80%, slowing to about the speed of a Level 2 charger. That’s why Level 3 chargers measure charge rates by how fast they get to 80%.

Which of Types of Charging Can I Do at Home?

Without any special equipment, the only types of charging you can do at home are Level 1 and Level 2. The Level 1 charger works with a 120V outlet, which is what you see all around your home and plug most household objects into. The Level 2 charger uses a 240V outlet. These are much less common, but most homes have at least one or two, as heavy-duty appliances (like dryers, ovens, and some power tools) require them. If you don’t have an available 240V/250V outlet, an electrician can usually install one without much fuss.
