The entire crossover class of vehicles is booming on today’s market, so much so that each and every segment is packed with a ton of viable options, not the least of which is the compact segment. One of our vehicles is among those great options in the compact crossover segment, and we thought we’d see how it measures up against one of its biggest competitors, by pitting the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan against the 2019 Chevy Equinox.
First introduced in 2007, the Volkswagen Tiguan has made an excellent option in its segment ever since. It received a facelift halfway through its first generation in 2011, before being completely redesigned and entering the second generation just a couple of years ago in 2016.

2019 Chevy Equinox |
---|---|---|
184 HP | Horsepower | 170 HP |
25 mpg | Combined Fuel Efficiency | 28 mpg |
7 | Seating | 5 |
37.6 cu. ft. | Cargo Capacity (Behind 2nd-row) | 29.9 cu. ft. |
As you can tell from a simple glance at the table above, these two crossovers are extremely similar to one another, but each has its own clear advantages. Starting with the first row, the Tiguan kicks things off with a leg up thanks to an extra 14 horsepower. That’s not a huge amount, but it’s enough to be a noticeable advantage. Unfortunately, the superior power opens up the Equinox to take the lead in fuel economy, achieving an extra 3 miles per gallon combined.
The main difference between the Tiguan and Equinox is that the VW is a 3-row compact, whereas the Equinox is just a 2-row. That means the Tiguan has more seating than the Equinox, accommodating an extra pair of passengers. It’s bigger overall, as it also offers more space for cargo behind the second row, 17.7 cu. ft. to be more specific. Although, behind its third row it only offers 12.0 cu. ft., which clearly isn’t as much as the Equinox offers.
If you can overlook the deficit in fuel efficiency, then the VW Tiguan might be the right 2019 compact crossover for you. Be sure to get in touch with us here at Capistrano if you’re interested!
