The VW Beetle delivers excellent performance with its turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine, which doles out 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The base-level 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine in the Fiat 500 only manages 135 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. While an enhanced version of the MultiAir engine is offered for the higher trim FIAT 500 Abarth model, it still produces less output than the Beetle, with 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft torque when equipped with the manual transmission and 157 horsepower and 183 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the available automatic.
Volkswagen infused the Beetle with a high level of safety. All VW Beetle models come standard with the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and the Intelligent Crash Response System, which turns on the hazard lights, shuts off the fuel pump, and unlocks the doors if the Beetle gets into a collision. The Fiat 500 doesn’t offer similar features.
The VW Beetle offers more space than the Fiat 500 for both passengers and cargo. It has a total passenger volume of 85.1 cu-ft, compared to 75.5 cu-ft for Fiat 500. It has a trunk capacity of 15.4 cu-ft, compared to 9.5 cu-ft for the Fiat 500.
