With its innovative design, electric powertrain and state-of-the-art technology, the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz made waves when it first debuted earlier this year at the North American Auto Show in Detroit. Recognized for its combination of electric mobility and forward-thinking style, the new I.D. Buzz was just named the “2017 Concept Truck of the Year” at the 16th Annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards.
Features of Volkswagen I.D. Buzz
While the I.D. Buzz has styling cues that harken back to the iconic VW Bus, its technology points to the future. It features a retractable steering wheel that senses the driver’s intentions and headlights and exterior lighting that can provide communication with pedestrians based on its I.D. Pilot autonomous driving mode. Also, ambient lighting inside and out provides a unique visual signature.

Built on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), the I.D. Buzz has an all-electric powertrain that delivers an estimated all-wheel-drive range of up to 270 miles. Also, since the batteries and drive system are housed in the floor, the driver and passengers can enjoy a roomy cabin, along with up to 162.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.
2017 North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards
The ceremony for the North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards was held at the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. More than two dozen jurors participated in the selection process of the awards. Twenty vehicles, each introduced to North America during this season’s auto shows in Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and New York, were judged. The I.D. Buzz beat out other finalists in the “Concept Truck” category, which assessed vehicles with the primary attributes of user-configurable cargo volume and weight capacity. Additional awards included “Production Preview Vehicle,” “Concept Car” and “Most Significant Concept Vehicle.”
