2016 Memorial Day Events and Services Orange County CA
Memorial Day’s origins date back to the Civil War when there was a desire to honor the fallen soldiers. It was officially proclaimed in 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was declared a national holiday in 1971. Memorial Day serves the dual purpose as a time to remember those who have died while in service of the U.S. military, while also kicking off the unofficial start of summer.
