With so much natural beauty in Southern California, we have much incentive for celebrating and protecting our planet. Earth Day was first started in 1969 by Senator Gaylord Nelson in Wisconsin, and since then the holiday has expanded to 184 countries and over 500 million worldwide participants. If you want to join in on celebrating Earth Day in 2016, check out one of these events in Orange County. 

Ocean Institute Earth Day 2016

April 23 • 9:00 am – 3:00 pm | April 24 • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Celebrate Earth Day with the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. Activities include Native Plant Garden Tours, Build your own Butterfly Garden, Lily Lab: Flower Dissection and Special Presentations. Also, a Tree of Life Native Plant Expert will help you pick out the perfect plant for your garden, and you can drop off your e-waste at the Ocean Institute from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, April 23. Earth Day at the Bay 2016 — Newport Beach

April 23 • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Newport Bay Conservancy, in partnership with OC Parks, present the 26th Annual Earth Day at the Bay. The event features many exhibits and booths designed to help us connect with the natural world and help preserve it for future generations. Celebrate 2016 Earth Day in Southern California

Earth Day San Clemente

April 23 • 8:30 am

Head to the Parque Del Mar by the Pier for Earth Day San Clemente. The celebration starts with a beach cleanup, followed by the main event with music, displays, giveaways and kid’s arts and crafts. (San Clemente Watershed Task Force, San Clemente Pier, San Clemente, CA 92672)

Mission Viejo Earth Day and Arbor Day

April 23 • 8:00 am – Noon

Make the environment your mission! The City of Mission Viejo will celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day on Mustang Run at Los Alisos. Volunteer opportunities are available for planting and cleaning up the landscape on Mustang Run. The City will host a Green Expo, and free hotdogs and ice cream (while supplies last) will be available for volunteers. (Mustang Run at Los Alisos, Mission Viejo, CA 92691)
